$5.1M in 2023 per-vote public subsidies
The Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario itself funded and paid for the Jamaica surveillance operation — the party spent roughly $3,000 of party money to send an operative to two Jamaican resorts in December 2023 to surveil newly elected Ontario Liberal leader Bonnie Crombie, with financial records showing $1,000.05 at the Ocean Eden Bay Hotel and $1,971.67 at the Royalton Negril Hotel. The link to public money is INDIRECT: taxpayers did not pay for the surveillance, and no government funds were used for the trip. The only sourced connection to public money is that the party received more than $5.1 million in taxpayer-funded per-vote subsidies in 2023 — general party revenue, not a payment for this operation.
