The Ford government lowered Ontario's tire recycling target at the beginning of 2025. Garages and tire dealers could not get used tires picked up, haulers lost work, and hundreds of thousands of tires were stockpiled in Sudbury and Ottawa. On Sept 21, 2026, the province raised the target from 65% to 80% by weight and promised more collection sites from 2027.
CEO of the Ontario Tire Dealers Association, which the Toronto Star says had been advocating for the increase in the tire recycling target that the province announced on September 21, 2026 (65% to 80%), after the government lowered the target at the beginning of 2025 and "hundreds of thousands of tires" were stockpiled at sites in Sudbury and Ottawa. Moffatt warned that the province's recycling capacity cannot be restored overnight: "The question now is how quickly those plans can be put into action and how quickly the collection and processing system can respond."
