Ray Gupta
Sunray Group
Ray Gupta is Chairman and CEO of Sunray Group, a Canadian hotel development company. Sunray Group purchased commercially zoned Beach Area 1 land from the Town of Wasaga Beach in early 2025 and is building a premium Marriott Hotel on the site — land that was formerly within Wasaga Beach Provincial Park and constitutes critical Piping Plover nesting habitat.
Connected Scandals
Doug Ford's government sold off 60% of Wasaga Beach Provincial Park — overriding 98% public opposition via an omnibus budget bill — while Bill 5 stripped the last provincial protections from Ontario's most important Piping Plover breeding site. When the Town began mechanically raking critical nesting habitat in April 2026 just days before the endangered birds return, Ecojustice filed a Federal Court lawsuit warning that failure to act will result in the species' extirpation from Ontario.
As head of the Sunray Group, Gupta's company is the direct commercial beneficiary of the Wasaga Beach park selloff — purchasing Beach Area 1 from the Town to build a Marriott Hotel on land that was stripped of provincial park and Endangered Species Act protections by the Ford government.
