What happened · Dec 6, 2018

Bill 34, the Green Energy Repeal Act, 2018, received royal assent on December 6, 2018, and the repeal took effect January 1, 2019.

The government introduced the Green Energy Repeal Act on September 20, 2018, and it received royal assent on December 6, 2018. The Green Energy Act, 2009 was repealed effective January 1, 2019, with some conservation and efficiency provisions moved into the Electricity Act, 1998. Municipal planning authority over siting renewable projects was restored on June 1, 2019. Opposition parties and environmental groups called the repeal largely symbolic, because the government had already cancelled 758 renewable contracts and no procurements were active.
