Asked on September 29, 2026 how much of the $5-billion Protect Ontario account had gone out, Deputy Finance Minister Gadi Mayman said about $40 million had been approved from 18 applications, "in addition to the $100 million on Algoma steel support" (Global News). Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy pointed to the $100 million in loans to Algoma the same day; the Toronto Star reports Algoma announced 1,000 layoffs after the loan was approved, and NDP MPP Jamie West said it got the money "basically with no strings attached."
