A Toronto Star analysis of Elections Ontario filings found five Ontario cabinet ministers' riding associations spent a combined $356,312 on "meetings hosted" across 2024 and 2025, at venues including a sashimi restaurant, a tequila bar and an axe-throwing establishment. The money came from donations that qualify for provincial tax credits.
Ontario director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, who said of the riding association expenses: "Even if there are disputes, they bring into question how our political parties are using taxpayer money." He noted the political donation tax credit is "more generous than the one you get when donating to a charitable organization" and said "parties really need to treat this money respectfully. Taxpayers are giving them that money, not just donors."
