Staged Announcements With No Reporters Invited

A government announcement made from an official podium is a public act paid for with public money. The Trillium's review found at least five occasions since mid-May 2026 where Premier Doug Ford stood at a government-branded "Protect Ontario" podium with no media advisory issued, no remarks posted or livestreamed, and no way for the public to hear what was said. Reporters learned the events had taken place only after images appeared online.

The events were not minor. They included the start of construction on the second of three Scarborough Subway Extension stations on July 31, remarks on the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension on July 10, a shipbuilding funding announcement on July 8, a long-term care groundbreaking at North York General Hospital with Health Minister Sylvia Jones on May 27, and the start of construction on the Bradford Bypass on May 22. Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria appeared at several of them.

The Trillium's count deliberately excluded third-party-organized events and ceremonial or guest-speaker appearances, so these are announcements the government itself convened. The government does still issue advisories for some events, occasionally with only hours of notice, which makes the pattern a choice rather than an administrative lapse.

The Premier's office did not respond to The Trillium's questions about why reporters were not notified, what criteria are used, whether the approach had changed, or what the announcements cost. An unanswered question about the cost of a taxpayer-funded event is itself the accountability problem.

The pattern emerged during an unusually long stretch without a sitting legislature. Queen's Park rose for an extended summer break beginning June 2, 2026, and the premier held ten press conferences in the two months that followed — the only regular venue left for questions once question period is unavailable.

NDP Leader Marit Stiles said Ford is "running scared" after he "repeatedly abused the taxpayer dollar," and that "Doug Ford doesn't want to be asked the difficult questions, not by the media and not by the opposition." The Trillium, Aug. 5, 2026.

That criticism lands against a backdrop of spending controversies already in the news. Twenty Toronto-area PC MPPs billed taxpayers more than $120,000 for local hotel stays under a "special circumstance" allowance intended for emergencies; Ford promised repayment, though the timing remains unclear. The government's $28.9 million jet purchase and sale drew similar scrutiny.

Announcements without reporters produce no record for the public: no transcript, no video, no questions, and no independent account of what was promised or what it cost. When an announcement is made from an official podium but reaches the public only as a curated social media post, the government controls both the message and the evidence of it.
